Research & Activities

Our research has helped to improve the knowledge of the way in which railway vehicles interact with the track including key performance aspects such as suspension performance, wheel-rail contact, and traction and braking. In partnership with industry and academic partners, this work has led to a number of tools and techniques being developed which are now used to predict deterioration of railway wheels and rails, to optimize the vehicle track interface, to increase safety and reliability levels, reduce cost and improve performance of the railway system.
Sustainable growth of the rail sector requires a dedicated and balanced approach addressing specific common research and innovation (R&I) challenges, while integrating and demonstrating cooperation between stakeholders across the whole rail value chain.
It is also vital that in the next decade the rail industry demonstrates a tangible step change which is visible to the public and generates interest in the railway domain.
Furthermore, the development of collaborative demonstrators will foster internal industry communication and collaboration. This will allow a more collaborative system approach towards innovation, breaking down possible silos between subsystems developers. It will also help early-stage identification of possible compatibility issues in the integration of different solutions.

Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS)

Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) is the future worldwide telecommunication system designed by UIC, in close cooperation with the different stakeholders from the rail sector, as the successor of GSM-R but also as a key enabler for rail transport digitalisation.
